Personally, I feel that hibernation would be a proportionate and excellent response to winter existing. I was very not prepared (mentally) for the snow last week. 😕 Also, I'm very out of shape because shoveling was harder on my back than usual. Usually, I get tired from the first shoveling, but it's a good sort of tired. This was just a painful sort of tired, blech. However, on the brighter side, I believe I'm now prepped for all my skating exhibitions next week! I will be very happy when those are over and done with (and the synchro competition the week after). Then I can properly devolve into a slug or maybe some sort of jellyfish. I have almost two whole weeks off at the end of the year, and I fully anticipate that I will merge with the soft sofa cushions during that period and become even more useless than usual.

But enough of my whining! Here is fandom stuff:
  • Exchanges due in November/December ([community profile] fffx, [community profile] ficinabox part deux, [community profile] yuletide_admin + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future sign-ups): I'm still at 5/7 (see above, RE: useless slug), but I'm making some good progress on my YT assignment! My goal this week is to get that done and posted. And then FIAB is revealing this weekend, so I have a boatload of editing to do for that, which I've already started.

  • Exchanges that will go into 2026: [community profile] au5k & [community profile] highadrenalineexchange. I did not nominate for AU5K, but a bunch of other people did for things that are relevant to my interests. That's definitely an exchange where I'll wait and see what prompts are up, because I am super finicky about AUs - so finicky, in fact, that I'm more inclined to treat than to sign-up myself.

  • Nope, nothing new on Femslash Salad Bar...

  • BNHA: I've started catching up on S8, and OMFG Bakugo is SO PRETTY in 8x03! And Deku didn't even get to see most of it! 🥺 Truly, that episode is a treasure for me personally, lol. Hoping to finish my catch-up this week.

  • I can now reveal some of my habits which were top-secret because I was angling for PHs, but ultimately I didn't pick them up. Starting off with: Felvidek! Holy shit, this game was so much fun! It is pretty much the congealed essence of "nerdy grad students procrastinating on writing their dissertations" and if that's not how that game was initially created, I will be genuinely surprised. I had so much fun with this! Short enough that I didn't get frustrated (there is a reason I have relatively few video-game fandoms, lol), and I loved all the characters. I may end up writing for this some time in the future, because I really loved it. My only complaint is that now I want a random video game of my historical era of study, goddammit! This should be a requirement for every graduate program, post-haste!

  • Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke - I did, indeed, finish this, with time to spare. And it was...okay? I have to say, I didn't love it. Definitely not as enjoyable as Piranesi, to my tastes, at least. It had that aura about it that some books do where 90% of the humor is deliberately designed so that no one who is not British will enjoy it. And I didn't really like the magic or magical system much, and none of the characters did anything for me. It dithered about in the Napoleonic Wars for way too long, too. It did start to pick up after page 1200 (lol, there is a "recommendation" for you!), and the ending was better than the beginning. But, all in all, it was very 'meh' to me. Oh well!

  • I can now reveal that the undisclosed thing I'm currently reading is The Deer and the Cauldron by Louis Cha - I can reveal this because it is very, very long and thus I was not able to pick up the PH associated with it in time. I'm currently on Ch13 (of 50 - they are LONG chapters, lol). This is an older novel, and I'm mixed on it. On the one hand, the good parts are REALLY good: There's a lot of really funny political commentary in there, and I really like the notion of a main character in wuxia novel who sucks at martial arts, is not a cultivator, and instead gets through solely by trickery, lies, back-stabbing, and luck. On the other hand, I'm starting to get into the "harem-building" sections and, whoa boy, is this some sexist bullshit! It's pretty hard to stomach at times, which is unfortunate. It's exactly the sort of thing SVSSS is making fun of with PIDW, lol, which is one of the things getting me through it. I am all there for the convoluted ways Wei Xiaobao becomes the leader of, like, every single opposing political sect all at once, mmkay? Can we just stick to that and ignore the harem stuff? (No, no, we can't.) Anyway, this is currently my reading focus!

  • Dear Door - When I have time, I'm still reading a chapter here and there on this.

November Totals: 247k for the year so far - only 3k from my 250k goal, which I still think I will make, even though November was my lowest wordcount of any month so far this year. I have 92 works revealed so far, but am definitely over 100 with works not yet revealed.

Goals for this week: 1) Sooooooooooo much editing for FIAB! 💀 2) Finish my Yuletide assignment. 3) Catch up with BNHA. 4) Read more of The Deer and the Cauldron. 5) Read more Dear Door, as the mood strikes me.

It's end of November, so time to update on the stuff I've been working on until the end of the year. Made some nice progress if anything!

Mandatory stuff

Finished all the exchange fics, reverse minibang fic and another zine fic I completely forgot to mention in the initial post, whoops. If anything, all the important stuff with a deadline was done

13/12 fic

The lovely fic for gregclair day was done, I loved what I did with it. You can see it here. It ended up being a little bit rushed, but I still loved what I did with it. The original idea I had for the 13/12 fic wasn't done, but I will leave it up for Gregor's birthday since it fits the occasion there even more since the focus was more on him.

Tfthy

Well. I didn't get to work on this much. I finished my main goal, so there's that. At least I am happy with how that turned out. I will continue on to work on this fic in the future, tho I wished I planned this out better to have it done until today.

New stuff to work on!

Sighed up for another exchange. Will be a lot easier to work on this time. This is the last one of the year (i hope) so it's a nice way to end it with a cute selfship exchange.

Some new challenges were also added: the Depress December for that angst material, or as I called it, 'Gregor torture month' because of how many prompts I can use with him. That, coupled with the next thing I will talk about, is going to be hell of a month for him when it comes to my writing because I sure do like to put him into situations.

The next event is the Macrocest Bingo Night Edition, which I primarily took for DMNoir works, as I do need to write them more, and IDV overall as it's been a while, but also decided to go 'fuck it we ball' and added some categories for Hermann/Gregor specifically, mainly to challange myself. I then ended up asking for another bingo because I wanted to try and do one just for them, but we'll see how that goes when I get it, as the waitlist for the next one is quite big, for the first one i waited a few days.

Creative bingo

Situation is the same as the last time, nothing changed. I will try to fit some of the prompts from the up events into this one too, as this is a personal thing and not a proper event. Some have a good potential to be done. I to need to finish 'Let me down slowly', that one has been on hold for way too long.

Everything else

One more Lifeless Stars chapter before end of the year. That much I need to do at least. I was hoping to finish it this year but things never go the way I plan it, so that was not a surprise lol. One thing I would love to do is more IDV fics. I've been lacking for a while as I've been focusing on Limbus in the last few months. I also need at least two more Antodrew fics before I can work on my January 5th one that is going to be special this time. At least more special than usual.

I think I might have at least one weird thing going on each week for the rest of the year? Fortunately, at least some of those weird things are 'staycation where I don't have work'. So, this week is Thanksgiving and is one such example. I do need to cram in at least one emergency practice session so I'm ready for our ice rink's holiday exhibition, but otherwise I have Wednesday through Friday free. Then next week it's two exhibitions, and then the week after that it's our synchro competition, and then I think is when I start my Christmas vacation, which runs through New Years. So, yeah, that's a lot of extra stuff. On the plus side, though, it's not snowing yet!

Here's what's going on fandom-wise:
  • Exchanges due in November/December ([community profile] fffx, [community profile] ficinabox part deux, [community profile] yuletide_admin + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future sign-ups): I'm now at 5/7. I got a cool thing that ate my brain done! I did some research on FFFX, but no writing, and no writing on YT either. My goal this week is to pick up one more PH, and then write some on YT and FFFX if I have time. If I don't get YT done this week, next week it's going to be my top priority.

  • Reveals! Here's the stuff I wrote for [profile] cuppajoexhange and [profile] seasonofdrabbles:

    • Look, Speak, Touch, Take - Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan from Guardian - priest, and my assignment for [profile] cuppajoexhange. I mean, what more can I say about these two? I love writing them, obviously, because they're tons of fun. (And, yes, Zhao Yunlan is shameless and horny, thank you for asking! And so is Shen Wei.)

    • One Bitten - Also Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan from Guardian - priest, my assignment for [profile] seasonofdrabbles. They did not suddenly get less horny or shameless in this, either.

    • What's in a Name - Jonathan Pine/Richard Roper from The Night Manager, a PH I picked up for [profile] cuppajoexhange. This is one of the secret things I was watching a few weeks back. I had watched the first few episodes some years ago, but then the people I was watching with marathoned the rest without me, so I never finished. But! This was a great excuse to rewatch the whole thing, which a fun spy-thriller, exactly what you would expect from John Le Carre, and it was fun writing a little post-canon reaction piece to it as well!

  • Nope, nothing new on Femslash Salad Bar...

  • Watching-wise, I finished the other undisclosed thing, but that one is still undisclosed.

  • BNHA: Planning to start catch-up on this one this week, since I don't have anything else on my to-watch list!

  • Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver - Finished it, and it was quite good! The horrible father suffered adequately, and I had many laugh-out-loud moments with the unreliable-narrator stuff in his journal, where he's talking about how rational and important he is, and he's clearly just a sexist asshole nutter. Sad book, though - poor Maud, and poor Clem!

  • Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke - This is now my top priority, since it's due back at the library in a week. Now that I've cleaned off the most of my plate, and I'm off work Wed-Fri, this is very doable, though. I'm liking this all right so far, but I wouldn't say I'm gripped or invested yet. I will report back next week when I'm done!

  • I'm still reading an undisclosed thing, but it's not the highest priority right now. I'll get back to that once I finish JS&MN, though.

  • Dear Door - When I have time, I'm still reading a chapter here and there of this.

Goals for this week: 1) Finish JS&MN! 2) Pick up/complete a PH. 3) Write more on YT & FFFX, time-permitting. 4) Resume catch-up on BNHA. 5) Eat lots of turkey.

Last year around September I wrote a fic for a the no true pair community event that was held on this site. It was this fic, a drabble, something I haven't written before (at least not intentionally). I thought it was a good experiment, as I normally have a problem with fic length. For the last couple of years, for whatever reason, I have put it up for myself that the longer the writing is, the better the fic is, at least when it comes to my own work. As per usual, the author is their own biggest critic, so seeing anything that I would deem 'too short' was not good enough. At some point in 2024, I was rather agitated with some of my fic's lengths, as a lot ranged in the 1k to 1.5k range, with exceptions of commissions that had to say within a specific word count.

Allowing myself to just write something very short, without any worry for the word count not being big because I have a limitation that is a small word count felt nice. I didn't have to pressure myself into stretching something to be long so that in my mind, it was 'good'.

After this, I participated in some bingo events held in the allbingo community. Since they all have a one month limit and are shown at the beginning of the month, I knew I had limited time to do them. This was before my year-long creative bingo was made (which will be important for later), so I only wanted to have some fun with it and do fills for at least 3 prompts to get a bingo. All of the fics ended up being under 1.1k words, with two being under 1k words. It felt nice to get that little bingo and post it in the community, I'll give it that.

Then, at the beginning of the year, I made my year-long creative bingo. A challenge for one of the squares was to get a blackout bingo for some event, not important which one. Because it was early in the year and I knew Valentine's was coming up, I decided that the Valentine's bingo in the allbingo community would be the target for this.

This turned up to be more of a problem than anything else.

All that I've written had been quite short, and while i was happy that I got that square checked off the bingo and the blackout, I didn't feel happy with the fics themselves. They didn't have the same feel compared to a longer one, an exchange fic or even a commission. I didn't get pleasure when posting them as much as I'd get for any other fic, it just didn't work out. Not to mention that I did most of them at the end of the month, with 5 of them on the last day. I got so burned out from it that I didn't write anything the following month (granted I did have an bang fic I worked on in that same month and a commission, so maybe those affected the writing burnout too. I will never know for sure and it's been months since then). Even if it was all short and done, was it really worth it?

I don't hate those fics, far from that. I was simply not happy with them the same way I would be with something a little bit longer.at least.

Until summer, I tired writing some more short stuff, mostly for events held on here, but it simply didn't work well. I wasn't happy with it, simply stopping from another bingo event after 2 fills and not bothering with a longer event I was also doing.

I had then returned to more longer writing, most notably the ficwip 5k event, with the word count being limited to 5k words max. It's an event meant for shorter words to shine, but to me, I had a bit of a different view. Short is usually 2.5k words, so in my head, this was still long or longer at least. A perfect event for me if you want to get more words out, especially after a long line of short works.

Both Pretty little lady and Hold me until I die fit the event criteria, but they were also a way for me to get better with my word count as they were not that short in my head. Not to mention that the latter fic kickstarted my desire to write for my first Identity V OTP after a while of just putting one or two fics a year, of which one was my annual fic for celebrating being in the fandom.

And when September came around... well, let's just say that my fic lengths got longer because I cannot for the love of everything shut up about Gregor and Sinclair as they need so many words to get to the damn point, which is not a negative, but a very welcome thing, especially with how much fun I've had with that.

What am I trying to get at?

I had a serious problem with hating anything I deemed short, but now I don't really do that to a degree. If I can tell a whole story in under 1k words and it looks fine, I won't get upset over it. I can write a short story and not hate it. I just finished an exchange and a reverse mini bang fic which are both under 1k words and I can say I liked writing them. I definitely got better with my word count problem and I'm glad I was able to resolve that.

So, yes, it sure is November out there, yes-siree! I continue to have way less energy than I want to, especially for skating, which is unfortunate, because I have two exhibitions and a competition coming up, and I have to learn two new programs. So, um, yay?

I'm getting less written than I'd like, too, but that's okay because I totally planned for this and didn't overload myself with assignments during The Dreary Months. Nevertheless, I got some shit done. Here's what's what this week:

  • Exchanges due in November/December ([community profile] fffx, [community profile] ficinabox part deux, [community profile] yuletide_admin + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future sign-ups): I'm now at 4/6, so I got more stuff done there, as I'd hoped. I didn't do any work on YT, but I did figure out what I'm doing for FFFX and even got the first scene written! My goals for this week are to pick up and finish at least 1 thing, and then make more progress on both YT and FFFX.

  • Gifts! Both [profile] cuppajoexhange and [profile] seasonofdrabbles are currently in their anon period, so here's a bunch of cool stuff I got:

  • Exchanges that will go into 2026: [community profile] au5k & [community profile] highadrenalineexchange. AU5K is actually in nominations now! I should go throw some names in the ring.

  • Nope, nothing new on Femslash Salad Bar...

  • Watching-wise, I'm now watching a new, different thing that I cannot disclose for impending anon reasons, but I will explain after reveals. Hoping to finish this week.

  • Dear Door - I continue to work my way slowly through the fun, low-stakes porn when I have the time. Which I don't too much for the next couple of weeks, because holy moly, here are all the books I'm reading...

  • Nicked by M.T. Anderson - Finished this, and yeah, the writing was not to my tastes. Except for that one fantastic joke about "invading the sanctum sanctorum", which is a hilarious euphemism for having sex with a monk, and now I'm sad that I can never use it because I have at least two pairings that it's extremely applicable to, and I'm also writing this down because I am in such great danger of forgetting that I heard this joke from a book and accidentally putting it in one of my fics in the future, because it really does sound like the sort of nerdy Latin nonsense that would originate in my brain. So, kudos to you, author, for coming up with a joke I wish I had!

  • Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke - Holy crap, this is 2000 pages! 😱 I mean, don't get me wrong: that's a good thing! And I've started it, and so far the writing style is pretty zippy. But I have soooo much to read right now. I wish I'd known beforehand, because I definitely would've paused this one until one of my holidays when I have more time. Which, I suppose, is essentially what I'm doing: I'm focusing on other things, and I'm hoping to read the bulk of this book over Thanksgiving.

  • The big thing I'm reading right now is something I cannot reveal for anon reasons, but is a lot of fun, and I will talk about it when the anon-silence period is over! It is also very long, though, and is taking up a bunch of my time.

  • Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver - I picked this up, and because it's the only physical book I have at the moment, I think I'll actually get it done before JS&MN, since I can fit in a chapter here and there whenever I'm stuck waiting in a place without wifi. So far it's good! I'm not quite sure if 'enjoying it' is the right phrase given how absolutely horrifying Maud's religiously abusive father is, but it's quite gripping, and I imagine I will enjoy it a lot when he dies (hopefully quite horribly)! This is a relatively short book, so I might get it done this week, but I'm not betting on it.

  • BNHA: Enough of the S8 episodes have aired now that, next time I get a lull in my watching schedule, I'm going to start marathoning this. I'm also keeping the movies/OVAs on reserve as my back-up treat, so nothing new to report here, yet.

Goals for next week: 1) Pick up and finish writing 1 thing. 2) Make some progress on YT & FFFX. 3) Finish watching the current secret thing! 4) Read more of the other secret thing! 5) Read more Wakenhurst. 6) Read other stuff, time permitting.
